Memorial Day with Friends
| May 31, 2011 | Posted by Karen under Boy Scouts, Family fun |
Yesterday was a day filled with parades, picnics and homemade ice cream! It was just perfect. We went over to a dear friend’s house to celebrate the day. We started of with their small town’s parade, which was lovely, then went to their house. Another couple brought fresh hamburgers from their own beef cow! Oh my goodness were those good. Now that’s what I’m talkin about!! Real hamburgers for once. Not those cardboard like prefab things everyone seems to love so much. Yumolicious. The kids played kick the can, Dan and the fellas played a game of horse shoes. Then later we all played a game of badminton. That is one tricky game when it’s windy! We finished off the day with another parade, in which Nate’s boy scout troop was in. Here are a few pictures of the day!

It’s a Hard Knock Life
| June 16, 2010 | Posted by Karen under Boy Scouts |
You know it’s amazing how some families can go through their existence with minimal injuries and no hospital visits…We are NOT one of those families. I determined years ago that God has given us the gift of medical ministry.
Okay, okay, I’ll get to the point. Last night at Boy Scouts, Nathan and his friend collided head on, full force while playing a running game. Those of you who know Nathan, know that he plays hard. I don’t have all the gritty details, as I was not there. But from what I gather, Nate and his friend Paul were running in opposite directions around a building and hit so hard it knocked both of them unconscious. Soon after Nate went into shock. He and his buddy Paul were whisked away to the Hospital by ambulance. Fortunately, Paul and Nate’s x-rays and CAT scans came back fine. Nate has a concussion and lower lumbar strain, as well as many bumps and bruises. He has no memory of the accident at the moment. He seems to still be stuck in a time loop of questions this morning. He continually asks, “What day is it? Did I hurt myself? My head hurts. What day is it?” And on and on it goes. I am taking him in to see his family doctor today to get checked again.
We would appreciate your prayers as Nathan heals from his head and back injury and that there would be no further complications. He is very frustrated with his amnesia and it upsets him. Who knew Boy Scout meetings could be so dangerous! ha ha. Anything with Nathan usually winds up dangerous!!

Wilderness Survival Camp Out
| June 7, 2010 | Posted by Karen under Boy Scouts |
In the midst of wild rain storms, Nate and his troop had their wilderness survival camp out. But rain and wind are almost always expected when they plan a camp out. It just seems the two go hand in hand for this troop. Just try to conjure up images of Survivor Man and you’ll be in the mindset of the these guys. Nate couldn’t wait for this camp out. They had to make shelters out of sticks and pine branches. No tents for these guys. Nate said it was creepy waking up with huge spiders on him and slugs! The mere thought causes me to shiver. I’m so glad I’m not a boyscout! Anyway, Nate survived the sleepless night. The only bad thing that happened was he sliced his thumb fairly deep with his knife. But again, injuries and Nate go hand in hand as well. What is one without the other? I’m glad he’s a tough guy. He said the camp out was not fun at all in the midst of it, but now that it is done he thinks it was great and would do it again. I’m thankful for Bryan, his troop leader, that is such a Godly example for these young men. He does such a great job mentoring and teaching them. I don’t have any pictures yet, because as Nate said to me, “Mom! It is a SURVIVOR camp out, not a photography session!” So, I have to wait for the scout photographer to send me some pics of the shelters they made. I did find a picture of some woods that looks very similar to where the guys spent the weekend to help you in “picturing” what it looked like.

Memorial Day Parade
| May 31, 2010 | Posted by Karen under Boy Scouts |
Nate’s boy scout troop participated in the Barrington Memorial Day parade. Nate said it was a wonderful time and he enjoyed watching all the flags. It’s nice to be able to pay tribute to our fallen soldiers and honor their memories. The one thing we really missed this year was singing all the patriotic songs. The kids really missed that. So, Emmy, Lauren and Olivia have been really working hard on their patriotic songs on the piano so we can sing them today. I am looking forward to that and feel so blessed to have kids who appreciate and understand the importance of our soldiers who have fought for our freedom. Nate also has put some updates on his boyscout blog as well. http://boyscout777.blogspot.com/ I’m sure he’d love to hear from you as well.

Nate’s Court of Honor
| March 31, 2010 | Posted by Karen under Boy Scouts |

Last night was the Boy Scout Court of Honor. Nate advanced to 1st class and received a merit badge for climbing and communications. For the climbing badge he went to an indoor climbing gym and learned several techniques for climbing and rappelling, as well as knot tying. It was both challenging and fun and helped Nate conquer his fear of heights. The communication badge was also difficult. He had to do an interview and also design his own blog. He is learning the joy and frustration of learning how to blog. You can see what his troop is up to at: http://boyscout777.blogspot.com He will be trying to update his blog after each activity. He doesn’t have a good camera yet, so that kind of slows down his posts. Hopefully we can find him a nice camera soon to help him record his adventures.

Greeting our Soldiers
| February 16, 2010 | Posted by Karen under Boy Scouts |
My dear friend Wendy and her son faithfully greet our soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq at Pease Air-force base here in Portsmouth, NH. Her husband Sonny has just left for Afghanistan. She offered to take Nate with her and Ryan to greet the troops. Nate really enjoyed the experience and got to meet some really wonderful and brave men. There were approximately 200 soldiers on this flight. He said the most exciting thing was getting to talk at length with two WWII veterans. Nate got to hear of their captures, escapes and heroism. He also got to meet with several military men who made Eagle Scout when they were in boy scouts. That was very encouraging to Nate, who has been striving to make Eagle Scout one day. One military man, the one in the picture, encouraged Nate to stick with it. We are thankful to Wendy and Ryan for letting Nate participate in such a wonderful experience.

Nate is Back From His 50 Mile Hike!
| July 18, 2009 | Posted by Karen under Boy Scouts |
Well, Nate survived his 50 mile hike! He came back exhausted and happy to have a real bed. One of the first things he said to me was “I will never complain about Dad’s eggs again!” I guess dehydrated food wasn’t that tasty. He said it tasted bad but he was so hungry he didn’t care. He was glad to have normal water too. They had to filter all their water from streams and ponds along the way. He bathed only once! Uh, smelly would be an understatement. He said he got to bathe in a nice water fall from a dam and they even got to swim and relax a bit. They would wake up each morning at 6:00, get their “bear bag”,(food stored in a bag up in a tree), cook and eat breakfast, take down tents, filter water, and then pack it all up. They would hike till 12:30 or 1:00 and make lunch and then start the hike back up again until 5 pm or so and make camp for the night. They hiked from Mount Sunapee to Mount Monadnock. We are so proud of him for accomplishing this great mental and physical challenge. He took some pictures along the way so I made a slideshow for you all to see some of the things Nate got to see.

Nate’s First Boy Scout Camporee!
| October 5, 2008 | Posted by Karen under Boy Scouts |

Nate went on his first 3-day camping adventure with his Boy Scout troop this weekend. He had to plan, pack his back pack and set up his tent all on his own. His tent buddy was his good friend Ben, who just joined the troop as well. I’m sure it was interesting having two newbies paired off together! They had to cook their own meals and clean up after themselves. (Maybe some of this will rub off at home, hey I can dream can’t I?)
Anyways, this year was their troop’s turn to host and judge all the events. Nate had to judge orienteering, so he had to study fast. He thought it was funny that he was getting to judge those who had been in scouts for years.
It got down into the 30s each night and Nate said he was glad for all the layers he had packed. He said it was coldest in the mornings when they had to get up at 6:00 am and get breakfast ready. Then they had to hike up a small mountain to the judging area, and it was gusty and cold all day.
I was told by the other parents that this was the first fall camping trip that had not rained in several years. Nate was ready though, he brought his rain gear just in case. I think he worked on packing that back pack for at least 2 weeks. He did such a great job and did it all on his own. Dan and I are so proud of him. His Boy Scout leader told Dan that Nate did and excellent job.
We picked him up at today around 1:00 and he looked tired and ready for a nice hot bath. He said it was a lot of fun, learned a great deal, and met some really nice people. We were all glad to have him home again, it was just too quiet without him.
