Three Christmas Dresses and One Crazy Mom

So about 8 days before Christmas, my sweet girls come to me and ask if I would be so kind as to make them new dresses to wear on Christmas day…..After they revived me and picked me up off the floor, I warily said..yes??
For my oldest daughter, who loves all things bright and colorful, I chose a lovely aqua silky fabric with an oriental look to it. I used Simplicity 2444 for the pattern. I love this pattern. It is so easy to work with and change up. I added about 3 inches to the length and made it sleeveless so her sweater would fit nicely over the dress.
My middle daughter, who likes a more subdued look, I used a black/gray silky fabric with a velvet bodice. I used a pattern from one of my favorite books, Sew Serendipity by Kay Whitt. Love this book! It is full of great full sized patterns and gorgeous photography. I used the tunic dress pattern. I give this pattern an A+ for ease of use of great instructions.
Last but not least, my baby. Okay she’s not a baby anymore, but to me she will always be. Like her older sister, she loves color, so we carried the aqua theme onto her dress as well, but using a different print. For her dress, I used McCall’s M5795 pattern. This too was an easy, straightforward pattern. I, however, did not like how they lined everything, even the sleeves. Kind of a waste of time and fabric in my opinion, especially if working with fabric that doesn’t need lining. So…I left it out and made my own neck interfacing.
So for those of you who thought I fell off the face of the planet, I’m alive. Barely. Naaa, just kidding. I was knee deep in fabric and had my sewing machine going at least 90 I think. It was fun, but I think next year they better ask earlier!
